We spend a lot of time taking care of the things we love—our homes, our gardens, our pets, even our cars. But how often do we think about taking care of the one thing that goes everywhere with us? Skin.

Our skin is around-the-clock body armor, protecting us from the elements, helping regulate body temperature, and serving as our first line of defense against germs. It deserves a little appreciation and TLC.

What Your Skin Does for You

Did you know your skin:

- Regulates body temperature.

- Helps prevent infection.

- Protects against UV radiation and pollutants.

- Allows us to experience touch, heat, and cold.

- Produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.

- Repairs itself every single day.

Point of Interest

Skin is the largest organ in the body, all 22 square feet of it. That represents 15% (give or take) of your body weight. Over the course of a day, humans shed roughly tens of thousands of skin cells.

Skin Care Myths

1. Hot Water Opens Pores

Hot water doesn’t open pores, and cold water doesn’t close them. Pores have no muscles for this type of action, no matter how you might scrunch your face.

2. You don’t need sunscreen on cloudy days

UV rays pass through not only clouds but also glass, meaning you can still be exposed while sitting indoors near a window.

3. Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer

Your skin is still “thirsty.” Skipping moisturizing can actually make your skin oilier because it tries to overcompensate. Look for oil-free, lightweight products.

4. You can hydrate your skin by drinking 8 glasses of water daily.

Adequate fluid intake absolutely contributes to overall skin hydration, although drinking extra water isn't a magic moisturizer.

5. Natural always means better.

Poison ivy is natural, too! Natural ingredients can be wonderful, but they can also trigger allergies or irritation. "Natural" doesn't automatically mean gentle or safe.

By the Way:

Not every skin care product is for everyone. So even if your housemate raves about a new cream through a dozen PMs, it might be horrible for your skin.

Determine your skin type (dry, oily, normal, combination, sensitive). That’s your starting point. Take the time to research various products and read reviews (I am amazed at how many people skip this).

If you can obtain trial sizes, that’s awesome.

No matter what, always try a new product on a small patch of skin and wait 24-48 hours to see if you have any negative reactions.

Simple Daily Skin Care Tips

- Cleanse gently—don't scrub your skin into submission.

Moisturize while the skin is still slightly damp (no waterfall necessary).

- Wear sunscreen every day. This is easy to forget. Leave it somewhere visible

- Change pillowcases regularly. All those dead cells - ewww

Wash makeup brushes. These can retain dirt from makeup, oils, dead skin cells, and microbes.

- Don't forget your neck and hands—they often show aging first.

Taking five minutes in the morning and evening to care for your skin isn't vanity—it's self-care. Those few moments can become a calming ritual, a chance to slow down, breathe, and do something kind for yourself. Healthy skin isn't about chasing perfection. It's about giving your skin the attention it deserves.

Whether you choose handcrafted soap, a gentle cleanser, or another product that suits your skin type, the goal is the same: clean without stripping away the skin's natural protective barrier.

Keepin’ it Simple

Your skincare routine doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes self-care begins with the soap or scrub you reach for every day. A beautifully crafted product can transform an ordinary routine into a small moment of relaxation.

As a soap maker, I believe the products we use every day should do more than serve a purpose. They should bring a little joy.
