National Honey Bee Day: What’s the Buzz?
Annually, on the third Saturday of August, we celebrate National Honey Bee Day (World Honey Bee Day). In 2026, that falls on August 15.-
Honey bees are hard-working and incredibly important pollinators, playing a major role in food production and environmental health. Bees help pollinate roughly a third of the foods we eat, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
As honey bees move from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they transfer pollen between blossoms. That allows many plants to produce fruits and seeds. In the bigger picture, pollination supports plant diversity, wildlife, and the entire food web.
FACTS ABOUT HONEY BEES:
Honey bees fly approximately 20mph, with wings beating 200-300 times per second (that’s what makes them buzz)
They communicate through a waggle dance
Bees must visit two million flowers to make one pound of honey, with one worker bee only making about 1/12 tsp of honey in her lifespan.
So, what can we do to help honey bees?
Celebrate Honey Bee Day:
🌻 Plant bee-friendly flowers (a pollinator garden). One of the best ways to celebrate National Honey Bee Day is by planting native flowers that provide nectar and pollen. Bees are especially attracted to blossoms in shades of yellow, blue, purple, and white. Consider adding bee balm (an appropriately named favorite!), purple coneflower, lavender, sunflowers, and goldenrod to your garden.
Skip the pesticides when you can. Chemical pesticides can harm bees and other beneficial insects that visit your garden.
Make a bee watering station. Bees need water, too! You can make a simple bee watering station with a shallow dish, fresh water, and a handful of pebbles or small stones. 💧
The pebbles give bees safe places to land and help prevent them from falling into deep water. Keep the water fresh and change it regularly, particularly during hot weather.

My Love of Honey Bees 💛
Many years ago, honey bees kept introducing themselves into my life.
They would land on my sales table and march purposefully all over my books. Some landed on me. One even gave me a sweet little kiss before flying away!
Whenever bees are nearby, I watch them with gratitude for the gifts they provide. It’s marvelous and magical.
At Stardust & Suds, I use honey soap, liquid honey, and honey powder in some creations.
Honey is gentle, soothing, and nourishing on the skin. Honey powder also adds a little natural exfoliating texture.
Golden Honeycomb Soap 🐝
You can try our playful Golden Honeycomb Soap any time. This shimmering, hand-painted soap features a charming bee motif and a honeycomb-inspired design
So this National Honey Bee Day, plant a flower, put out a little water, watch a bee at work, and take a moment to appreciate these extraordinary pollinators.
