Many of us forget how essential self-care is to our body, mind, and spirit. Daily neglect can damage the way we feel, how we see the world, and our relationships. When you constantly put others’ needs before your own, your inner reserves start to wane. As the saying goes, you can’t fill another cup from an empty vessel.

What stands in our way? In part, it’s the concept. Don’t think so big! Little things matter. A short walk to clear your mind, getting ice cream, calling an old friend and talking about nothing in particular. These are all examples of simple self-care.

Now, I have to confess that I have to remind myself of this. My initial instinct is to jump into someone else’s problem and push mine aside. It’s a distraction, BUT the issue remains unresolved and could worsen.

Step one is mindfulness. Make a promise to yourself to have at least one “me” moment daily. Here are some ideas you can try:

Move your body

- Stretch before getting out of bed.

- Take a short walk.

- Garden.

- Fly a kite.

- Dance

- Chase a butterfly (they’re fast little suckers)

Quiet your mind

Feed your Spirit

- Be silly.

- Paint, sing, or write.

Self-pampering; self-interests

- Take a mental health day

- Set a boundary (“no” is not a four-letter word)

- Sun worship (with sunscreen, please)

- Go to a local museum

- Use Aromatherapy Wax Melts for Your Home

There are tons more, but you get the idea. These little actions can help us slow down, release tension, shift our perspective, and reconnect with ourselves. As you are kind to yourself, that kindness radiates from your aura into the world.

Self-care doesn't have to be complicated, expensive, or time-consuming. Sometimes it's a candle in the bath, a few quiet minutes under the vault of heaven, or simply giving yourself permission to stop for a while. You deserve that moment, too
